Books On Japan
I picked up a book from my local library called "Japan Unbound" by John Nathan. Granted, I have only gotten through the Introduction and 80% of the first chapter. However, I have found some things that I had no idea about. Some of these things are the major disconnect that children have from their families and how angry, lonely, and bent on hurting themselves and/or others they are. What was interesting is that I met with a friend of mine who lived in Japan and he confirmed these things to me. He told me how hard it was to teach there due to a total disconnect peppered with a lot of disruption.
You would think that this would deter one from wanting to go to Japan, but it has done the opposite to me. Do we truly realize how much people need Jesus Christ in their lives and people who are willing to care enough to tell them?

REDISCOVERING JAPAN, REINTRODUCING CHRISTENDOM 2000 YEARS OF CHRISTIAN HISTORY IN JAPAN by Dr. Samuel Lee, The Netherlands (Amsterdam, 16 November 2009)
In Rediscovering Japan, Reintroducing Christendom Japan's unvoiced Christian history and cultural roots are examined from an alternative perspective. It is commonly believed that Christianity was introduced to Japan by the Spanish and Portuguese missionaries during the 1500s; however, Samuel Lee draws on various forms of cultural, religious and linguistic evidence to argue that Christianity was introduced to Japan through the Lost Tribes of Israel, who were converted to Christianity through the missionary efforts of the Assyrian Church of the East around A.D. 500. Much of the evidence he discusses has become submerged into many Japanese folkloric songs, festivals and is to be found in temples. There are, for example, approximately 300 words in Japanese and Hebrew/Aramaic that are similar. Further, Dr. Lee outlines the history of Catholicism in Japan during the 1500s, the systematic persecution of Christians from 1600s to the 1800s, and the rise of Protestant Church in Japan. The historical portion of the book ends with an analysis and discussion of 21st century Japanese society. Lastly, in Rediscovering Japan, Reintroducing Christendom, Samuel Lee questions the missiological methods of Western Christianity and advocates an approach based in dialogue between Christianity and other cultures.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Understanding Japan through the eyes of Christian Faith is a fascinating book, combining Sociology and Christian world view in a systematic manner and simple language. Samuel Lee, has skillfully examined various facets of the Japanese society and culture looking for answers of why Christianity is not widely accepted and practiced in Japan. After dealing the historical background of Christianity in Japan and describing the socio-cultural condition of the nation, the author comes up with strategies and suggestions of how Christianity should approach Japan and suggests that Christianity should be reintroduced in Japan. Understanding Japan through the eyes of Christian Faith is a sociological and spiritual handbook for missionaries, mission organizations, churches, Christian Universities/Colleges and every Christian who is interested in reaching Japan.
WHAT OTHERS SAY:
Samuel Lee has made a valuable contribution to the missions community by unlocking the secrets of a society that has been closed to the rest of the world for centuries. This book provides the global church with a valuable key to opening and reaching Japan with the gospel.
J. Lee Grady, Senior Editor
Charisma Magazine
Japan is a nation ready for the Gospel. However, for decades there has been a missing piece to the missiological puzzle. Samuel Lee’s profound book is a giant step toward revealing that missing piece. Once it is uncovered and applied, Japan will experience the bountiful spiritual harvest we have been waiting for!
Dr. C. Peter Wagner, Chancellor Wagner Leadership Institute
I am writing to express my appreciation to you for the work you did in writing Understanding Japan Through the Eyes of Christian Faith. I was one of the participants in RJC Academy's Japan 101 class. Before I began the course, I had only a small understanding of Japan from things that I had read, heard, or experienced on my visits there. My wife and I have been praying about opportunities to minister to Japanese students at the nearby university, but I had a strong sense that I was not properly equipped to specifically reach out to Japanese students. I began praying about that God would show me how I could be equipped, and shortly thereafter, I found out about the Japan 101 class.
Reading your book was very enlightening in so many different aspects. Being able to read a concise account of Japanese history, cultural condition, and spiritual condition gave me a good foundation in the equipping process that I have been seeking. At times, certain elements of the content frustrated me, but upon completion of the book and processing all of those elements to see the "big picture," I realized how much I did not know and how much I had learned. Looking back after completing the class, I can see how your work gave me a greater knowledge and understanding of Japan in the six short weeks of the class. It is a very useful and solid foundation for a better understanding of my Japanese student friends and to build better, more meaningful relationships with them.
Thank you so much again! May God bless you in your ministry, and I look forward to any future books you might write about Japan.
